ipod touch 6th gen battery

just a quick post for a quick job.

friend made an attempt to change the battery of his daughter’s ipod touch 6th gen. when he got inside, he found that the battery was soldered in. he works with small things, but soldering this was not something he felt comfortable doing. not sure if he solders or not, but this joint is a bit different. a very thin ribbon cable that lays down on top of the motherboard. and when he removed the old battery, the tabs ripped off. fortunately, the tabs ripped from the old battery side and not the motherboard. i didn’t have to rebuild any new tabs. he then secured the new battery tabs against the motherboard and applied tape to hopefully make a good pressure point contact.

of course it didn’t hold and eventually he gives me a call. when i open it up, this is what i see. the motherboard contact pads, with the torn traces, from the battery, still attached and sticky adhesive all over the motherboard.

we first have to remove the old solder and remains of the old battery contacts and prepare the pads for the new battery.

that looks nice and clean – all the old adhesive removed as well.

we lay down the battery contacts against the motherboard pads and line them up correctly and apply the right amount of head and flow the solder between them and finish with a nice rounded bead. (you can see the somewhat translucent yellow “target” window on the new battery tab with the soldered target on the motherboard underneath)
