yes, the charging port on the nintendo switch is indeed made for a USB C and not a micro USB. the port and jack looks very similar at first glance to someone who may not be familiar and can result in a damaged port and will require a repair. to be specific, this charging port will need to be replaced.

i jumped right in before taking some “before” pictures.

there is a nearby connector that needs to be protected from the large amount of heat used to pull the port. mine is a pink jelly type of heat shield. works very well, but you have to avoid some types of connectors as it can be quite a mess to pull out if it gets smudged inside. trick is to apply gently, let it cure first before proceeding with the heat.

port is off and now to clean up the pads and use a more flexible leaded solder. this repair is a bit tricky as there are 2 rows of pins on this port that have to have a great connection. the outer row is visible, but the other row is located underneath the port and not visible unless the port has been removed. it’s very important the pads are prepped correctly and the right temperature is used to remove the port without pulling pads, and reconnected with a solid connection.

the next few images are to show you how well this stuff can shield. the new port has been installed and if you notice the outside is very black and took the brunt of the heat while the components on the underside were well protected.

you can see the 3 black square blocks and also the indentations in the pink heat shield where they were covered.

also take a close look at the nearby connector once things were completely cleaned up – the black plastic survived the intense heat without any deformation. i used ~383° celsius which is ~720° farenheit. that’s pretty hot.

it’s really great stuff for this kind of situation. connector looks perfect.

when doing the reassembly, it’s a good time to replace the thermal paste with some fresh high quality compound.

and yes! it’s charging! great news!
